Aakash Chopra has praised Rahul Tripathi for maintaining his composure to help the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) reach the final of the 2021 IPL.
KKR needed seven final runs on Ravichandran Ashwin’s ball in last night’s Qualifier 2 match against the Delhi Capitals (DC). However, they lost the grounds of Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine in successive deliveries after only a single was scored on the first two balls.
Tripathi then hit Ashwin squarely to the ground for a six to lead the Kolkata-based franchise to its third Indian Premier League final. Speaking about KKR’s hitting effort, in a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra praised Tripathi for coming to the team’s rescue after they nearly spoiled an easy chase.
“The drama at the end was epic. The wickets kept falling. At the end, you needed six two-ball runs, and Rahul Tripathi hit a six on the ground. Tripathi ji ki lathi mein dum hai, and I’m so happy to see him because he’s so very dear to me “.
The former KKR player praised the 30-year-old for keeping his nerves at the crucial moment. Chopra elaborated:
“He hasn’t played for India, I’m not sure if he will play or not, but the IPL has made him a star. This is where talent meets opportunity. He was absolutely exceptional once again, drenched in all the pressure and he scored a six at the end to help his team win. “
KKR required only 13 races of the last 25 deliveries with nine windows in hand, but lost a flurry of fast windows. Dinesh Karthik, Eoin Morgan, Shakib Al Hasan and Sunil Narine were unable to open their accounts as KKR had a bad time in what should have been a comfortable chase.

Aakash Chopra on KKR’s mature start-up partnership
Aakash Chopra was also effusive in his praise of KKR’s opening pairing of Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill. He said:
“Their initial partnership, you can sing praise for them, the way they run the game. They are both young Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill, but the maturity with which they play, they keep leaning the game towards themselves slowly.”
The former India starter praised them for giving KKR the perfect start in his quest for a 136-run goal. Chopra observed:
“They have understood the template, that you don’t need to run fast. Shubman Gill was going to run a ball. The important thing was that you lost your first wicket with the score of 96 after the 12.”
Venkatesh Iyer and Shubman Gill have been largely responsible for KKR’s turnaround in the UAE leg of IPL 2021. The left-to-right opening combo has invariably given the franchise a great start, something that KKR struggled to make it through the Indian leg of the tournament.
Q. What is the best opening pair?
