The flame was lit in the hands of the priestess Xanthi Georgiou and the first torchbearer, was the ski champion Giannis Antoniou who passed the flame to the Chinese Olympian Jianjun Li.
International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said in a statement: “More than 3,000 years ago, the Olympic Games were born. It was right here in Olympia, in this sacred land, when the ancient Greeks celebrated the Olympic Games.
We are grateful to the Greek people until today for this precious gift to humanity. This is the reason why I would like to thank the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, who honored us with her presence today, demonstrating the direct connection of modern Greece with this noble heritage “.

On behalf of the organizing committee of the Beijing Games, Vice President Ziking Wu stressed: “It is truly a historic moment for us to receive the Olympic flame for the 24th Olympic Winter Games. On behalf of the President of Beijing 2022 Ki Kai and the organizing committee, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Greek Olympic Committee and to the government and people of the Greek Republic.
