A distraught Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant struggled to describe his feelings in the post-match interview after the team’s defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The Kolkata team booked their place in the 2021 Indian Premier League (IPL) final on Wednesday.

Despite finishing the league stage as the No. 1 team, DC lost both qualifiers to exit the tournament in third place.

In what looked like a one-sided game until the 18th of the second inning, KKR lost six wickets for seven runs in a span of 22 balls before ending the game with one ball remaining. After the loss of three pieces of land, Rishabh Pant said:

“I have no words to express at the moment. We cannot change things after the game. We continue to believe, we try to stay in the game as long as possible. The players almost retired him. Unfortunately, he did not go our way.”

Sent at bat first, DC limped to 135 on a slow Sharjah track. The spray made things easier for the KKR hitters, as their starters propelled them to a 96-run tie with just 74 balls before losing their way to the penultimate ball. Rishabh Pant credited the KKR bowlers for maintaining control after the power play and making scoring difficult.

Pant, who was fired for six, added:

“They threw really well in the intermissions, especially after the power play. We got stuck and couldn’t rotate the strike. The Delhi Capitals are known to be positive and hopefully we’ll come back better next season.”

Hopefully we’ll come back better next season: Rishabh Pant

One of the most consistent teams in the past three seasons, DC is the only team to have made the playoffs in all editions of the competition since 2019. Praising the franchise, Rishabh Pant positively summed up the 2021 season, saying:

“We play cricket very well, yes, there will be ups and downs, but at Delhi Capitals, we stay positive. We are there for each other, we take care of each other and we continue to learn. Hopefully, we will improve more and come back better next season.”

Three-time IPL champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will now play two-time KKR winner in Dubai in the 2021 IPL final on Friday.
