Jim Ross says Bret Hart deserved a raise

Jim Ross believes that Bret Hart deserved to be the highest paid Superstar in WWE during the height of his popularity.
In October 1996, Hart announced on RAW that he had decided to stay with WWE amid interest from WCW. Despite signing a 20-year contract with Vince McMahon’s company, The Hitman still joined WCW a year later after agreeing to a three-year contract worth $ 9 million.
On the latest episode of his Grilling JR podcast, the former WWE commentator and executive said that Hart had every right to expect the best possible deal:
“Bret felt he had great value. He felt like I should have paid him more and frankly I don’t disagree with that. He should have been the highest paid guy in WWE by far. He was the most valuable player in WWE at the time by far, so for me it was not a difficult decision. But also, I’m not looking at the books. I’m not looking at the accounting for Vince and whatnot, ”Jim Ross said.
Bret Hart was one of the biggest names in the wrestling business in 1996. Earlier that year, he lost to Shawn Michaels in a 60-minute Ironman match in the main event of WrestleMania 12.
Jim Ross on the importance of Bret Hart to WWE
Bret Hart built a loyal fan base during his 13 years in WWE between 1984 and 1997. Although he received positive reactions in the United States, he was especially popular in Europe and in his home country of Canada.
Due to his popularity around the world, Jim Ross felt it was important for WWE to try to keep Hart:
“Losing Bret would have been a huge hit at live events,” Ross said. “And although live events are not of great importance these days, it seems that because of the rights fees and such and the promotions getting their money from a different source, Bret was always that staple that attracted houses. He was great at touring live events and selling tickets and making money for the company, ”Ross said.
Jim Ross added that Bret Hart had more respect among his teammates than almost all other WWE Superstars. For that reason, he thought it was “difficult to put a dollar price” on someone as invaluable as Hart.
