Week 5 is upon us and somehow we are almost a quarter into the 2021 season. Betting lines, spreads, and over / under has been a turbulent ride, but we have navigated smoothly on the DFS side of things, where there are always sleepers and value picks to target in DraftKings and FanDuel contests.
If you are a daily fantasy football addict or just like to find an edge or angle with all your football related bets, this column will be on your street all season long. Every week, I go through the player pools on DraftKings and FanDuel and compile a list of sleepers and / or value picks to help you earn some cash. The more players of value you add, the more money you have left for weekly stallions tested elsewhere on the list.
MORE WEEK 5 DFS: Best Stacks | Lineup Creator
If you read this column before Week 4, you would have benefited from our advice to add a large number of low-cost, high-value players to your DFS rosters. Here’s a short list of some of our successes from the past week, including the cost of each player’s DraftKings and the final PPR result:
- Matt Ryan, Falcons vs. WFT (DK: $ 5,000 | FD: $ 6,700): 37.02 fantasy points
- Aaron Rodgers, Packers vs Steelers (DK: $ 6,800 | FD: $ 7,600): 28.12
- Jonathan Taylor, Colts at Dolphins (DK: $ 6,300 | FD: $ 6,600): 04.20
- Antonio Gibson, Washington football team at Falcons (DK: $ 6,100 | FD: $ 7,100): 15.5
- Zack Moss, Bills vs. Texans (DK: $ 5,300 | FD: $ 6,000): 12.2
- Marquesa Brown, Cuervos (DK: $ 5,400 | FD: $ 6,400): 19.1
- AJ Green, Cardinals at Jaguars (DK: $ 4,500 | FD: $ 5,600): 17.7
If you wrote any of these profitable picks last week, you would have benefited from good, cheap production and provided an extra stud or two elsewhere. Getting the most for your money has always been the name of the game at DFS, so it’s important to do your due diligence before building lineups. Leave the deep dive in our hands – we are here for you from the first start to the last play of the 2021 NFL season.
Without further ado, let’s jump right into week 5!
All player values are from DraftKings and FanDuel. All stats are from NFL.com and Pro Football Reference.

NFL DFS Picks Week 5: Sleeping QBs, values for DraftKings, FanDuel
Daniel Jones, Cowboys Giants (DK: $ 6,000 | FD: $ 7,400)
Jones had 400 yards and two touchdown passes Sunday against a fairly good New Orleans defense, leading the Giants to a surprise victory. Duke’s product has a respectable 98.3 QB rating, and averages 24.8 fantasy points per game. Despite hamstring injuries holding his WR1 and WR3 (Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton), Jones helped four different Giants reach 74 receiving yards. His running ability also keeps his floor high, as he averages 47 rushing yards per game and has two rushing touchdowns this young season. The Cowboys defense has grown by leaps and bounds since its horrible 2020 campaign, but I still like the potential of Jones flirting with 30 points for the third time this season. With a projected point total of over 50, the underdog Giants (+7.5) have an implied touchdown total of three. Saquon Barkley’s on-screen passes and scoring discards count the same as a Jones-designed slip at the goal line.
Trey Lance, 49ers at Cardinals (DK: $ 5,700 | FD: $ 6,900)
Jimmy G injury was likely to occur, that sort of thing is as common as seasonal allergies, so it was only a matter of time before we entered Trey’s season. The No. 3 overall pick, Lance, won’t always look good in the game movie, but his floor will almost always be low in the 20s against mid-to-low level defenders. His legs give him a similar advantage to Kyler Murray’s, even if his passing still needs work. This game could be a shootout, so if Lance starts, I’ll be happy to do it for less than $ 6,000.
Jameis Winston, Saints at Washington (DK: $ 5,600 | FD: $ 7,000)
This is a good example of why you should always know your format. In DraftKings, the Washington soccer team gives up 12th place with the most fantasy points to quarterbacks. In FanDuel, WFT yields the most fantasy points in the NFL to quarterbacks. You may not want Winston in DraftKings, but you should be beyond intrigued with FanDuel. Washington went from being the fifth-best scoring defense in 2020 to the fourth-worst scoring defense this season. At first glance, you’d think this would be a defensive battle, but it’s more than likely a shootout between Winston and Taylor Heinicke. How interesting!
Another other notable bargain from QB:
Taylor Heinicke, Washington football team in the Saints (DK: $ 5,900 | FD: $ 7,300)
Heinicke has been incredibly low-key the last two weeks, causing the WFT Nation to completely forget about their long-lost FitzMagic. The Saints aren’t as easy a brand as the Falcons, but they’re not good at passing and the game’s script should require a lot of offense on both sides.
WEEK 5 STANDARD RATINGS:
Field marshal | Running backwards | Wide receiver | Tight end | D / ST | Kicker
NFL DFS Picks Week 5: RB sleepers, values for DraftKings, FanDuel
Chuba Hubbard, Panthers vs. Eagles (DK: $ 6,000 | FD: $ 6,700)
I’m optimistic about Hubbard even though he only has 20 PPR points since he replaced the injured Christian McCaffrey. If the rookie gets just one of Sam Darnold’s two rushing touchdowns last week, we’d see his playing record in an entirely different light. Hubbard has averaged 4.5 yards per carry in the past two games, and caught seven of his 10 goals this young season for 45 yards. We all know the advantage that comes with replacing running backs in this Panthers system (see Davis, Mike). I think $ 6,000 is a bargain discount for a guy with this talent and opportunity against a mediocre Eagles D. Darnold is not Cam Newton, and he will not continue to live in the end zone.
Chase Edmonds, Cardinals vs. 49ers (DK: $ 5,900 | FD: $ 6,200)
Edmonds has the distinct advantage of being a dual-purpose running back in the best offense in the NFC. His vision, popping, elusiveness, and good hands make him a perfect match for the explosive Kyler Murray’s running back. Edmonds is planning a touchdown, and I bet it will happen this week in some way against the Niners. San Francisco has actually been below average when it comes to fantasy points allowed to running backs, so hopefully the Cardinals’ back will carry some momentum from their big day against the Rams (12-120 on the ground , four receptions for 19 yards). The air). The touchdowns will come.
Damien Harris, Patriots at Texans (DK: $ 5,500 | FD: $ 6,500)
The Patriots own the Texans historically (10-3 head-to-head record), and Pats head coach Bill Belichick will want to reestablish the run after being blocked by the Buccaneers at home last week. Harris has no competition for carries at the moment, and they’re even using it on pass routes (finally!). I’m very fond of Damien, and not just because my wife and I are planning to name our son Damian (OK, a slight spelling difference, but still!). Fire up the New England RB1 for a catch-up game.
Another notable bargain from RB:
Damien Williams, Bears at Raiders (DK: $ 5,600 | FD: $ 5,800)
Williams takes on the role of Chicago’s starting running back with David Montgomery (knee) hurt, and the Raiders can’t stop the race for their lives. Also, his name is Damien! Easy choice, here.
WEEK 5 PPR RANKINGS:
Field marshal | Running backwards | Wide receiver | Tight end | D / ST | Kicker
NFL DFS Picks Week 5: WR sleepers, values for DraftKings, FanDuel
Kenny Golladay, Giants at Cowboys (DK: $ 5,900 | FD: $ 6,200)
Kenny G appears to be finally finding his rhythm in New York, hauling in six of seven goals for 116 yards in the Giants’ overtime win over New Orleans last weekend. Now, he has a date with the division rivals Cowboys, who are ranked 29th in PPR points allowed to wide receivers (30 in the middle PPR). In what should be a high-scoring affair, the target percentage should remain healthy, with or without active Sterling Shepard (hamstring) and Darius Slayton (hamstring).
Marvin Jones, Jaguars vs. Titans (DK: $ 5,700 | FD: $ 6,600)
Jones had a low week in the bad luck of the Jags’ loss to Cincy last Thursday, posting just 5.4 PPR points. In the three weeks leading up to that, he finished with a fantasy point total of 12.2, 17.5, and 18.7 respectively. The Titans are last in fantasy points given to wide receivers, so I like that Jones makes a big comeback this weekend. Trevor Lawrence’s escape is coming, it’s only a matter of time.
Hunter Renfrow, Raiders vs Bears (DK: $ 4,900 | FD: $ 5,800)
Renfrow has been remarkably consistent for Derek Carr and the Raiders this season, helping them achieve a 3-1 record atop the AFC West. Basically you can type in the always reliable slot to get double digits week after week. Its ceiling increases over time, as evidenced by its 35.2 PPR points in the last two weeks. Chicago ranks 28th in PPR fantasy formats against wide receivers, so Renfrow at $ 4,900 looks like a steal.
WEEK 5 FANTASY: Sleepers | Busts | Get started, feel them
NFL DFS Week 5 Picks: TE Sleepers, DraftKings Values, FanDuel
Dalton Schultz, Cowboys vs. Giants (DK: $ 4,400 | FD: $ 6,200)
Schultz has clearly been the preferred tight end target for Dak Prescott, with back-to-back strong performances against Philadelphia and Carolina. In those two games, he had 12 receptions for 138 yards and three touchdowns. Schultz has received at least seven targets in three of the Cowboys’ four games this season, and the Giants rank 25th against tight ends in PPR (and 29th against TEs in half-point PPR).
Mike Gesicki, Dolphins at Buccaneers (DK: $ 4,200 | FD: $ 5,600)
Gesicki had a slow start to the season but is gaining momentum lately. With Miami’s receiving corps a bit battered, the big tight end has developed some chemistry with veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Gesicki caught six of seven goals for 57 yards and a touchdown last week, and caught 10 of 12 goals for 86 yards the week before. He’s as solid as tight ends at these prices.
WEEK 5 NFL PICKS TIPS: Pick ’em pools | Survivor groups
NFL DFS Week 5 Picks: D / ST Sleepers, DraftKings Values, FanDuel
Patriots at Texans (DK: $ 4,900 | FD: $ 5,000)
The Patriots almost got the surprise at home in Tom Brady’s homecoming to Foxboro, and now they travel to Houston to play a Texans team they’ve had over the years. If Tom Brady fights a defense, Davis Mills should have a bad day against them. Don’t overthink this: The Texans are the fifth most generous team in fantasy defenses.
