Two people were injured in rocket fire on Baghdad’s “green zone”, which notably houses government buildings and the American embassy.

Two people were injured on January 13 by a rocket which hit a school located in the “green zone” of Baghdad, while two other rockets fell in the grounds of the American embassy, learned the AFP from an Iraqi military source.

“Three rockets were fired towards the green zone. Two of them fell on the grounds of the American embassy and another on a school located nearby, injuring a woman and a girl, “this senior official told AFP on condition of anonymity. .

Another security source, who did not wish to be identified, told AFP that the projectiles that fell in the compound of the American embassy, itself located in the “green zone”, had not done ” neither dead nor injured ”.

On its Facebook page, the embassy denounced an attack perpetrated “by terrorist groups who are trying to undermine the security, sovereignty and international relations of Iraq”.

The attack was not immediately claimed.

Explosions and shots from the “green zone”

In the early evening, AFP journalists heard two explosions as well as shots from the “green zone”, an ultra-secure perimeter where, in addition to the United States Embassy, many Iraqi ministries are located.

Rocket fire and drone bomb attacks targeting US troops and interests in Iraq have increased in recent weeks.

The most recent dates back to January 5. Five rockets were then fired against an Iraqi base housing forces of the international coalition led by the United States in the west of the country.

This wave of attacks has intensified since the very start of the year, as Iran and several allied groups in the region marked the second anniversary of the deaths of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani and his Iraqi lieutenant Abu Mehdi al-Mouhandis, killed by US drone fire in Iraq on January 3, 2020.

Never claimed, these attacks are systematically attributed by the United States to pro-Iran Iraqi factions demanding the departure of all American troops stationed in Iraq.
