Legend, The requirement for students to wear masks in high schools was removed earlier this year, but schools can reintroduce them

Hertfordshire schools have introduced tougher anti-Covid measures after an increase in positive cases.

A number of county high schools have asked students to wear face masks in common areas and some have reintroduced temporary bubbles.

The additional measures should be in place until the mid-term break, when the exams take place.

Jim McManus, county council director of public health, said he “works closely with schools.”

“We are aware of the higher infection rates in some parts of the community, including those under 16,” he said.

“We continue to closely monitor outbreaks in schools and the Covid team in our schools remains available to advise each school on appropriate measures. “

Martin Atkinson, principal of Beaumont School in St Albans, said additional measures were put in place there after “a few clusters” of Covid cases.

“We had maybe three or four cases in one group, which triggered our epidemic action plan and the need for further action,” Atkinson said.
