Why Jamal Adams of the Seahawks was presented as “the best in the nation”; Security strung after proclamation

The best in the nation? Jamal Adams was hardly the best in the building on Sunday night.

The Seahawks safety had a unique way of introducing himself during the Steelers-Seahawks player videos Sunday night: instead of saying his college (LSU) or his high school (Hebron, Carrollton, Texas) or even his elementary school, Adams followed his name by saying he was the “Best of the Nation”.

While Adams’s confidence is second to none in the NFL, this was not simply a proclamation of his skill level. Adams was apparently referencing a viral video featuring Trabis Ward, a former Tennessee State University soccer player, who was shot and killed in October 2020.

The video, now 13, shows Ward exaggerating, even calling himself the “best in the nation”, with some emphasis on the “nation” part.

In any case, the Adams reference was not caught by many viewers during the “Sunday Night Football” shooting. The Seattle safety, who signed a big-money deal during the offseason, underperformed in the loss to the Steelers, continuing his dismal 2021 season as part of one of the league’s worst defensive units.

The Seahawks would fall to the Steelers 23-20 in overtime, with Adams on the hook for several missed opportunities to make game-changing plays, including a pass from Ben Roethlisberger that hit him in the mask.

Viewers wouldn’t pass up Adams’s hype, offering a humble slice of cake during and after the loss:
